Being in the ultrasound program has thrust my classmates and me into an extremely unique situation. The regular situation of a new grad finding an employer has turned. WE are in demand!
I just think back to my days in university. I had a steady summer job which left me jobless during the other three seasons of the year. I obtained a management role, gained lots of experience, and liked my job. Unfortunately, it made it difficult for me to find a job in September and quit when summer started.
Many years ago, I started my job hunt the day after Labour Day. In the beginning I was a bit picky because after all I was a university student. My education should amount to something….but after 1.5 months, I got desperate. I remember applying for positions that I could force myself to like and bear with until summer hit. I eventually landed a job working in a gym. I ended up hating my job and counting the days until summer. The next year, it took me two months to find a job. Once again I found myself applying to horrible jobs. Thankfully I was hired by a fantastic company and obtained a position that I liked :D I learned a really hard lesson through those experiences. I learned that I NEED to find field that I love and is in demand. Ultrasound satisfies both requirements.
So back to the present….so far we have been recruited by Interior Health, Northern Health, and Vancouver Coastal Health. We are meeting with CML healthcare this week and next week we are meeting with Greig’s Associates. Medray is also trying to plan a meeting with us too. I’m pretty excited to learn about these different clinics and see what they have to offer us.
All these offers have put a bit of pressure on us. Recently we found out that last year grads were starting to apply for jobs around this time. I want to find the best job for me. Timing is of the essence. I don’t want to commit to something now and lose out on a better opportunity down the road, but I also don’t want to miss out on great jobs that are available now. My goal is to secure a job by the end of the summer. Wish me luck!
