Wow last week went by so fast! There were so many extra activities planned for us last week. We had a guest speaker, looked at an animal part, and scanned x-ray students. All of this on top of our busy schedule!

Guest speaker:

Debbie, our guest speaker for BCCH had soooooo much knowledge. She gave a PowerPoint presentation about scanning babies….more specifically the cranium and spine! If you have researched Sonography, you might have already known that there are some limitations to Sonography. The sound beam cannot penetrate through air and bone. In babies, their head bones have not fused yet so sonographers are able to assess the brain by scanning through the fontanelles and sutures on the head. These skills are not entrance level skills so it was interesting to be introduced to these techniques. In November I have the opportunity to shadow at Children’s Hospital so I’m excited to use my knowledge.

Animal part:

In our General Sonography class we have been learning about musculoskeletal imaging. I have a kinesiology background so the stuff should be review for me….but it isn’t :P I feel like I’m learning all over again! For the other students without the strong anatomy background that I have, it’s a bit difficult remembering where muscles/tendons are located and most importantly what they are called. Our instructor Ken, got his hands on…..a cow’s leg!  I wonder what his wife might have thought when he brought it home to store in their fridge! Tee hee hee! We got some hands-on learning experience with the knee. It was fun to move the knee around and see all the tendons we were learning about.

IPE:

What is this? Interprofessional Education….which was started last year by one of the Sonography instructors! Now it is part of the curriculum in many healthcare programs! For our IPE, Sonography has joined forces with the radiology program (X-ray). We had the opportunity to scan new bodies….the x-ray students acted like our patients. They each had a sheet of paper telling them what their symptoms are and what specifically to tell us. We were handed a requisition that simulated what we would see in clinical. The whole point of the exercise was to simulate a clinical environment so we could learn. We had real patients, sonographer reports, time pressure crunch, reporting to a “radiologist”, getting a patient history, and figuring out the findings. I think the x-ray students were excited to get scanned and see how their insides looked! The feedback we got was extremely positive. In a few weeks, we switch and become the patients for the x-ray students. It’s a nice way to get to know students from other modalities since ultrasound is kind of isolated in the trades building.carotid

Congrats!!!

To who? To our hard working instructors of course!

Charmaine has been awarded a Teaching Excellence award.  Shaheen was also nominated for the same award. Why would future students care? Well it just showshow exceptional the Sonography instructors are of course!
