Scavenger hunts and award ceremonies

Man, how is it over halfway through November already??  Checking my email this morning, I was greeted with a reminder that finals are only three weeks away.  Yikes.  While I severely enjoy all the Christmas decorations at the mall and the Christmas themed commercials on TV (yeah… I’m a bit of a Christmas nut), this is always kind of a nose-to-the-grindstone time of year.

So – let’s get into it!  By far the most fun I had this week was doing our radio telemetry lab.

Looking like real professionals.

Looking like real professionals.

What is telemetry, you ask?  It’s the transmission of information from a transmitter to a receiver.  Researchers put the transmitter on wildlife to track them and get information on their movements, behaviour, and location.

In less scientific terms, you walk around with a giant antenna and receiver, play with dials, and follow the beeping noise as it gets stronger.  It’s kind of like a scavenger hunt, which as we all know are super fun even beyond the age of twelve.

It’s not the first time I’ve done telemetry – I was up in the Okanagan area this summer, wandering the hills of Sawmill Lake, looking for poorwills.

Anyways, we got to take it in turns to hide the transmitter somewhere in the forests outside BCIT and then make one of our group find it with the antenna and receiver.  We briefly contemplated having someone put the transmitter in their pocket and running around so we’d have a moving target to find … kind of like that TV show Mantracker.

Jess, lookin pretty cool.

So all in all, pretty cool day.

In other good news, I received the Mark Angelo Award this term.  This was really exciting for me, because Mark Angelo is a huge name both at BCIT (he taught there for 37 years and was the head of the FWR program) and in the environmental community.

I attended the awards ceremony on Wednesday and got to meet him in person – he’s someone I greatly admire and I can only hope to have such a profound impact on the community and the environment as he did!

Until next week folks-

Audrey
